Environment

Environmental issues were incorporated
from the early stages of Calais Port 2015 project.

Calais Port 2015 environmental measures

Like any major infrastructure project in France, a series of environmental measures were requested from the stakeholders after the public inquiry carried out in 2012. These measures were set by prefectoral order and include :

A – Mitigation measures during the construction

These measures are of several kinds :

  • Optimization of the breakwater ground plane to mitigate the impact of the hydrosedimentary conditions ;
  • Phasing works in time and space to limit the disturbance of marine mammals and birds living nearby ;
  • Implementation of a light plan adapted to limit light pollution ;
  • Measures to limit road traffic, and more generally noise ;
  • Measures to fight against marine and air pollution ;
  • Protected and heritage plant species within the project area to be moved ;

B – Mitigation measures during the operating phase following the construction phase

They are mainly implemented by the concessionaire :

  • Preservation of areas suitable for birds nesting on the port hubs ;
  • Monitoring water quality and sanitation of platforms ;
  • Environmental performance for buildings with High Energy Efficient label ;
  • Measures to limit road traffic disturbance by rail traffic management ;
  • Measures for maintenance dredging provided by the Hauts-de-France Région ;

C – Follow-up and monitoring measures before, during and after the construction phase :

They are implemented by the Hauts-de-France Région, the concessionaire or the Design and Construction Joint Venture :

  • Monitoring water and air quality ;
  • Developing a viewing site for migratory and wintering birds and marine mammals ;
  • Support for access to employment in close collaboration with the Nord-Pas de Calais Région on recruitment / employment / training schemes and created jobs monitoring ;
  • Implementation of a “Maison du Projet” ;
  • Ecological management of the undeveloped area outside the port domain ;
  • Differentiated management of developed port areas ;
  • Scientific monitoring of species ;
  • Bathymetry monitoring to the Hemmes de Marck ;

D – Compensation measures

Both following compensation measures aim at developing sites or equipment to increase their environmental contribution :

  • Renaturation of the area having sheltered until 2016 the migrants’ camp ;
  • Implementation of an artificial reef at the breakwater bottom to be studied.
